COMMUNICATION SYSTEMS SPECIALIST
(Emergency Management)
Pay: $25.04/hr. - $37.52/hr. ($52,083.20/ annually - $78,041.60/ annually)
Shift: Monday - Friday,8:00 AM - 5:00 PM (40 Hours/Week)
Location: 1040 Alpha Ave, Bartow, 33830, FL 33880

ILLUSTRATIVE DUTIES
Skilled work installing, maintaining, programming, and repairing two-way radio communication system equipment, two way radios, pagers and other two-way radio electronic equipment.
Can independently use electronic testing equipment and utilize required tools to perform high level diagnostics to verify proper operation, troubleshoot, isolate and repair system or component malfunctions for radio communications equipment.
Maintain liaison with radio communications and other vendors for proper operation and
maintenance of equipment. Assist in organizing and establishing operating controls and
procedures for various communication systems. Maintain current knowledge of communications systems (hardware and software) modifications and upgrades.
Performs related duties as required.
KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES, AND SKILLS
Considerable knowledge of principles and practices of radio communications systems, electronic
systems, electrical theory, operating principles of radio transmitting equipment, related power
supplies, and the use of communications test equipment.
Working knowledge of standard methods, practices, tools, equipment and materials for the repair
and maintenance of electric, electronic, and radio communications systems, occupational hazards,
workplace safety precautions, computers, and radio communications related application software.
Ability to work from service manuals, follow complex oral and written instructions under limited supervision, establish and maintain professional working relationships with others, see colors,
speak and write clearly and in a manner that can be understood. Able to walk, climb, stand, sit for
long periods, bend, stoop, crawl, and independently drive to and from work sites perform tasks that require hand / eye coordination. Able to lift forty five (45) pounds of weight.
Ability to maintain a professional relationship with various internal customers, first responders,
and all other system users. Analyze their needs and respond to their technical and operational inquiries with clarity, timeliness, completeness, and accuracy.
Ability to read and understand blue prints and schematics.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Must pass a security background check. Must obtain and maintain Federal Bureau of Investigations
(FBI) Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) Security Awareness certification through the
Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) Employees hired into this position after January
1, 2013 must obtain and maintain this certification as a condition of employment.
Associate degree from an accredited institution in radio technology, electronics, computer science,
telecommunications or closely related fields.
Four (4) years of experience in repairing and maintaining two-way radio communication systems.
Must possess a valid driver’s license with a clean driving record and with no restrictions or be able
to secure a valid Florida driver’s license with no restrictions at the time of employment within this
classification.
Experience and working knowledge of component level troubleshooting.
Experience and working knowledge of standards, rules, and regulations pertinent to
telecommunications industry including, but not limited to FCC, FAA, ANSI, TIA/EIA.
SPECIAL PREFERENCES

Knowledge and experience with Motorola 800 MHz Simulcast Trunked Radio systems.

Knowledge and experience with Motorola MCC 7500 radio dispatch consoles and operations.

Knowledge and experience with various Public Safety Radio System software programs,
-
Knowledge and experience with programming public safety radios, dispatch consoles, MNI
and Cambium microwave equipment, RF test equipment, and radio electronics.

Knowledge and experience with Distributed Antenna Solutions (DAS) or Bi-Directional
Antenna solutions (BDA)

Knowledge of first responder and public safety radio communications technical and operational requirements.

This position may be required to report for work when a declaration of emergency has been declared in Polk County.
