Position Overview:

The Screw Operator is responsible for operating the screed controls on an asphalt paving machine, ensuring proper depth, width, grade, and finish of the laid material. This role plays a critical part in delivering a smooth, uniform surface and maintaining production efficiency on-site.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Operate the screed controls to adjust the height, slope, and width of asphalt during paving operations.
  • Maintain proper alignment and mat thickness in accordance with project specifications and job site conditions.
  • Monitor and adjust material flow to prevent segregation, cold joints, or mat inconsistencies.
  • Coordinate closely with the paver operator, ground crew, and roller operators for continuous, high-quality paving.
  • Perform pre-operation checks and minor maintenance on the screed and related equipment.
  • Watch for inconsistencies in material distribution and make real-time adjustments.
  • Assist with cleaning, lubrication, and minor repairs of the paving machine.
  • Follow all site safety protocols and report unsafe conditions to supervision immediately.
  • Work efficiently in a team and assist with other site duties when needed.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Minimum OSHA 10 required.
  • 2+ years of experience as a screed operator or in a similar asphalt paving role.
  • Solid understanding of paving operations, materials, and finish techniques.
  • Experience with screeds from major manufacturers (e.g., Carlson, Vogele, Caterpillar, Roadtec).
  • Familiarity with automated grade and slope control systems (Topcon, Trimble, etc.) preferred.
  • Ability to read and understand grade stakes, job plans, and cross-slopes.
  • Good physical condition, able to stand for long periods and work in outdoor environments.
  • Strong teamwork, communication, and situational awareness.
  • Valid driver’s license; CDL is a plus.
  • Must pass pre-employment drug test and safety orientation.
