Job Summary

The Roller Operator is responsible for achieving proper compaction, surface smoothness, and uniform density per project specifications and quality control standards.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Operate various types of rollers (e.g., steel drum, rubber tire, vibratory, double drum) to compact asphalt, soil, and aggregate base materials.
  • Monitor compaction process and make necessary adjustments to achieve target density and finish.
  • Work closely with the paving crew, especially the paver and screed operators, to time rolling patterns and avoid defects like over-rolling or segregation.
  • Observe material and surface conditions and communicate with foreman or quality control personnel if problems are detected (e.g., cracking, shoving, rutting).
  • Perform daily pre-start inspections and basic maintenance on the roller.
  • Maintain safe distances and awareness when operating near workers, trucks, and other equipment.
  • Follow project-specific compaction patterns, speed control, and rolling sequences.
  • Maintain logs or documentation as required by foreman or site supervisors.
  • Assist with other tasks as needed when not operating equipment

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Minimum OSHA 10 required.
  • Minimum 2 years of experience operating rollers in roadwork or civil construction.
  • Familiarity with different compaction techniques and roller settings (e.g., vibration frequency, amplitude, static vs. dynamic).
  • Ability to identify compaction issues and make real-time adjustments.
  • Knowledge of safety procedures around traffic control zones and live paving operations.
  • Physical ability to work in hot, noisy outdoor environments for extended periods.
  • Valid driver’s license; CDL is a plus.
  • Must pass pre-employment drug test and safety orientation.
