Description:

Position:

Reporting to the General Manager, the Staff Underwriter reviews personal lines policy applications, change requests, and renewals to evaluate degree of risk, classify and rate for insurance to accept, modify or decline following company underwriting guidelines. The Staff Underwriter serves as a consultant to producers, claims, processing, loss control, reinsurance, and marketing personnel for personal lines policy inquiries.

 

Responsibilities

Review individual risks and make decisions using company underwriting philosophy • Analyze underwriting reports as necessary for detailed fact finding • Utilize company generated reports and order reports if necessary • Review incoming inspection reports on a timely basis • Provide quotes for new business, to include changes, limits, and policies in force • Develop a plan of action based on policy holder document information/ inspection reports and company protocols • Specify conditions to be imposed on different types of policies, for example, asking that a property owner install a security alarm • Assist Management with production and loss results analysis • Assist Management with plans for agencies with adverse results • Manage underwriting audits within scope of agent responsibilities • Policy Administration • Write new business • Review new business applications, bind, and issue • Renew current business • Cancel or non-renew policies as needed • Administer policy changes and reinstatements • Order inspections on new business and renewal business and assign for review • Monitor audit reports for internal policy processing • Market and promote company business lines with existing agents and recruit new agencies • Record keeping • Ensure security and confidentiality of data • Assist any department with requests for underwriting information or DOI issues • Identify process improvement opportunities • Provide end-user testing for company IT • Participate as needed in special department projects • Assist with keeping premiums competitive • Generate letters of experience

Education / Experience

A bachelor's degree and three to five (3-5) years' related property/casualty insurance experience (preferred), OR • A master's degree in a Business degree or related field, OR • Any appropriate combination of education, experience and training that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities
