The Phlebotomist II is responsible for processing decontaminated medical devices as they are received, according to established priorities, medical device IFUs, and best practices.


Job Responsibilities:

  • Adhere to hospital and departmental patient identification policies by ensuring that the two patient identifiers match on the patient’s armband, the labels and requisition prior to performing phlebotomy.
  • Interacts with patients and parents to perform phlebotomy procedures following protocols for age-appropriate care. 
  • Uses appropriate equipment/ supplies, holding techniques, and language and knows maximum blood draw volumes for age and weight of patient.
  • Performs venipuncture, fingerstick, and heel stick phlebotomy procedures including blood cultures, newborn screens, d- xylose and glucose tolerances, etc.   as written in the Central Receiving and Processing manual
  • Follows standard work processes and one-piece flow by transporting (either physically or via the tube station) patient samples to the laboratory immediately after collection; before collecting the next patient. 
  • In the NICU unit collects no more than 3 patients before sending samples to the laboratory via the pneumatic tube: Packages and transports specimens through the pneumatic tube system using the STAT transaction protocol.
  • Adheres to all applicable safety policies, including but not limited to changing gloves between patients, good hand hygiene technique, containment of spills and splatters, and proper disposal of lancets, needles, and other contaminated supplies. 
  • Keeps collection carts/trays and work area clean and orderly daily to foster a safe working environment according to the written section and safety policies and procedures.
  • Maintain Kanban system by using the approved phlebotomy tray or cart and stocking the cart per policy.
  • Use pain management techniques (Comfort positioning) while performing phlebotomy in the outpatient setting. 
  • Engage the parent in selecting the appropriate position by explaining to the patient and/or parent the techniques and how they will make the process beneficial to the patient.


Job Requirements:

  • High school diploma or equivalent – Required
  • 1 year phlebotomist experience – Required 
  •  Knowledge of routine laboratory operations and medical terminology.
  • The ability to operate a PC and general office equipment; the ability to use a centrifuge, pneumatic tube system, and sphygmomanometer.
  • Demonstrates good phlebotomy and excellent customer service skills.

Job Details:

  • Schedule: Monday– Friday 7:30 am – 6:00 pm 
  • 10-hour shifts 
  • Starting at $21/hr. (Based on experience) 
  • Full benefits – healthcare, dental, vision, 401k program.
